CHAPTER 8 -- Anthony Lupp of Pennsylvania

Anthony LUPP [notes] [Johann Christian(4), Henrich(3), August(2), Anthony(1)], the first child of Johann Christian LUPP and Anna Maria SCHORN, was born February 6, 1733, in Hof, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, and was christened (as Johann Tonges LUPP) February 18, 1733, in the Bad Marienberg parish church. He married his first wife Anna Catherina DENCKER on October 22, 1758. She was born about 1734, the daughter of Johann Christian DENCKER. Their first three children were born in Hof. They arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Polly about October 18, 1766. He was a schoolmaster. They served as sponsors for a child of Samuel Muse in 1775 at the Jordan Reformed Church in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Lehigh County July 29, 1778. Anthony LUPP married his second wife, Susannah, widow of Rudolph PETER of Heidelberg Township, Lehigh County, on December 8, 1778. In the 1790 Federal Census of York County, Anthony LUPP is listed as the head of a household containing two males over sixteen and two females. They are in part of York County that later became part of Adams county. This is probably Anthony Sr. and Anthony Jr. living in the same house. There is a Jacob LUPP in neighboring Dauphin County which is probably his son Jacob. In the 1800 census of Adams County there are two Anthony LUPP households and a Jacob LUPP household. Anthony LUPP died near March 6, 1805, the date of the administrative bond for his estate. In that bond, Jacob LUPP is listed as executor. It is possible that Anthony LUPP married a third time, for there is an undated note titled "Widow declines" among his estate papers, written in German.  Usually "widow declines" means the widow does not want to serve as executor of her husband's will.  The word "damaged" below probably means something like "is it too complicated for me".  The note reads something like:

The [?] is too damaged(?) for me

and too much [?] I don't have no concern with it

that's what I have to say anna maria [her mark?] lupp

Michel Wehr

Michael WEHR was Anthony's son-in-law and probably is serving here as a witness. At the time of his death, Anthony LUPP lived in Mount Pleasant Township in Adams County, just east of Gettysburg. The inventory of Anthony LUPP's estate is lengthy, but very interesting and is therefore reproduced here in its entirety. Notice that he owned 21 books, quite a large library for the time, but not unusual perhaps for a schoolmaster.

Text Box:

The children of Anthony LUPP and his first wife Anna Catherina DENCKER were:

+        1.  Anna Margaretha LUPP, b. in Hof, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, and christened December 6, 1759, in the parish church at Bad Marienberg, m. November 5, 1780, Michael WEHR.

+        3.  Anthony LUPP, b. in Hof, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, and was christened April 8, 1765, in the parish church at Bad Marienberg. He m. Esther KECKLER. He d. in May or June of 1824, in Tyrone Township, Adams County, PA.

+        4.  Jacob LUPP, perhaps b. about 1771 in PA, m. Anna Maria, surname unknown.

+        5.  Peter LUPP, b. September 3, 1776, in Lehigh County, PA, christened September 8, 1776, in Whitehall, Lehigh County, PA, was buried September 21, 1778, in Lehigh County, PA.

Anthony LUPP [notes] [Anthony(5), Johann Christian(4), Henrich(3), August(2), Anthony(1)], the third child of Anthony LUPP and Anna Catherina DENCKER, was born in Hof, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, and was christened April 8, 1765, in the parish church at Bad Marienberg. He married, between May, 1793, and April, 1794, Esther KECKLER. She was born about 1769 or 1770. Anthony LUPP was a carpenter by trade, and apparently never owned any land. He lived in Menallen Township, probably from as early as 1790, until 1818 when he moved to Tyrone Township. He paid taxes in the respective townships from 1803 to 1819 on two cows and his carpenters tools. Nine of his children, all that we have found, were christened in the Arendtsville Lutheran and Reformed Union Church from 1794 to 1816. Anthony Lupp died before June 12, 1824, the date of the Administrative Bond for his estate. The inventory of his estate, dated in Adams County July 12, 1824, as transcribed by Robert Lupp and here tentatively translated, lists:

1 teen Plot Stoff an pipe [tin pot stove and pipe] $2.50

Anthony's wife Esther Lupp died June 13, 1849, aged about 80 in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. The children of Anthony LUPP and Esther KECKLER were:

+        1.  Elizabeth LUPP, b. April 20, 1794, and christened in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA, on May 26, 1794.

+        2.  Peter LUPP, b. November 26, 1795, in Adams County, PA, and christened there at Arendtsville, November 29, 1795. He m. October 1, 1822, Elizabeth LOWER. He d. March 17, 1861, in Butler Township, Adams County, PA.

+        3.  John LUPP, b. February 15, 1798, in Adams County, PA, and was christened there in Arendtsville, April 18, 1798. He m. before 1824, Maria, surname unknown.

+        4.  Katherina LUPP, b. August 26, 1799, and christened in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA, September 29, 1799.

+        5.  Susanna LUPP, b. May 18, 1802, and christened in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA, July 4, 1802.

+        6.  Maria LUPP, b. June 19, 1803, and christened in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA, July 17, 1803. She is probably the Mary Lupp or Loop who had three children out of wedlock. She may have been the Mary LUPP living alone in Berwick Township, Adams County, PA, in 1830. It is also remotely possible that she is the Magdalene LUPP who m. February 12, 1833, Christian KUHN, at Conewago Chapel, Edge Grove, Adams County, PA, with witnesses Mary O'NEIL and Margaret ROSENSTIHL. She had children:

a.    James LUPP, b. January 30, 1824, christened May 2, 1824, at Christ Reformed Church, Littletown, Union Township, Adams County, PA, with sponsors Jacob and Elizabeth SCHEELY. His father was James DONLE.

b.    George LUPP, a twin, b. February 21, 1827, christened March 27, 1827, at Conewago Chapel, Edge Grove, Adams County, PA, with sponsors George and Mary GAUKER.

c.    Rebecca Elizabeth LUPP, a twin, b. February 21, 1827, christened March 27, 1827, at Conewago Chapel, Edge Grove, Adams County, PA, with sponsors John ORENDORF and Mary WEIS.

+        7.  Johan George LUPP, b. November 16, 1805, and christened in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA, January 5, 1806.

+        8.  Solomon LUPP, b. January 30, 1808, and christened in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA, April 10, 1808. He was a farmer. In 1840 he was living in Hagerstown, Washington County, MD. Before 1836 he m. Elinor (Ellen), surname unknown. She was b. about 1811 in PA. In the 1860 census they are taking care of two of the childen of William ASKEY and Mary FORCEY after the latter died in 1853. It is possible, therefore, that Elinor is a sister of William ASKEY or of Mary FORCEY. Elinor d. before 1880:

a.    Robert LOOP, b. abt 1836, in PA. He was living with his father in the 1880 census of Boggs, Clearfield County, PA. No known marriage.

b.    Mary Ellen LOOP, b. December 22, 1842, in MD. She m. William James TURNER, before 1861. He was b. September 6, 1932, in Boggs Twp., Clearfield County, PA. She d. +        9.  Jesse LUPP, b. November 3, 1816, and christened December 1, 1816, in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA.

Jacob LOOP [Anthony LUPP(5), Johann Christian(4), Henrich(3), August(2), Anthony(1)], was the fourth child of Anthony LUPP and Anna Catherina DENCKER. We know from the christening record for one of Anthony LUPP Jr.'s children that Jacob LUPP's wife's name was Anna Maria. He was born in Pennsylvania about 1771 and she was born in Pennsylvania about 1772. Jacob LUPP appears in the tax records for Menallen Township in Adams County for the years 1799, 1800, 1802, and 1806, some of the other years' records being missing. He appears in the 1800 census of Menallen Township as a male aged 26 to 45 with a wife aged 26 to 45 and two girls under ten. He may be the Jacob LOOP who is censused in 1810 in Columbiana County, Ohio. He shows up in Wayne County, Ohio, in the 1820 census. There are two Jacob LOOP's in 1830, and in 1840 Jacob LOOP, Sr., is enumerated with his wife, both between 60 and 70 years old. In 1850 the father and son are enumerated as Jacob LOOP and Jacob LOOP, Jr. The children of Jacob LOOP and his wife Anna Maria were:

+        1.  Jacob LOOP, Jr., b. about 1806 in PA, m. Nancy, surname unknown. She was b. about 1806 in PA.

+        2.  Henry LOOP, m. Catherine, surname unknown. She was b. between 1800 and 1810. He d. near November 7, 1836, in Wayne County, OH. She d. there near January 18, 1841.

He married October 1, 1822, Elizabeth LOWER, the daughter of John LOWER and his wife Elizabeth. She was born April 9, 1798, in Streban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania and was christened May 20, 1798. Peter Lupp was a carpenter. He died March 17, 1861, in Butler Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Arendtsville, Adams County, Pennsylvania. The children of Peter LUPP and Elizabeth LOWER were:
