Registered this 27th October 1824. [note: written 1816]: I, Peter Loop, of the Town of Hillsdale in the County of Columbia, State of New York considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory, blessed be God for the same, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following: That is to say first I will direct give and bequeath with my loving wife PRUDENCE as much of estate as will render her a good and comfortable support during her natural life to be furnished and provided by my son Henry Loop out of my estate in a good wholesome decent and charitable manner and in case she shall be sick she shall be provided with a good and suitable medical aid and when necessary and at her option so long as she shall continue to live with my said son Henry but in case she may choose to live with any other person then and in such case I give and bequeath unto her two hundred and fifty dollars to be paid to her out of my estate within three months after she shall leave him, which said sum is to be by her appropriated toward her support. Item: I give and bequeath my grand children being the children of my beloved son CHRISTIAN LOOP deceased one hundred dollars to be equally divided among them. Item: I give to my son PETER LOOP, JR. one dollar and fifty cents. I give to my son MARTIN LOOP one dollar and fifty cents. I give to my son DAVID LOOP one dollar and fifty cents. I give to my daughter JENNY one dollar and fifty cents. I give to the children of my daughter MARY VAN DEUSEN fifty dollars to be equally divided among them as they shall severally arrive to the age of twenty one years with the interest after my decease. I give to my son NATHANIEL LOOP one dollar and fifty cents. I give to my son PHILYER LOOP one dollar and fifty cents. I give to my son BENJAMIN LOOP one dollar and fifty cents. All of which legacies and bequeasts are to be paid to them at or within six months after my decease or as soon thereafter as they shall severally arrive to the age of twenty one years. All the rest and residue of my said estate whatsoever where I shall die seized as will real and personal in possessions or revision or remainder I give and bequeath unto my son HENRY LOOP his heirs and assigns forever. And I hereby appoint my loving wife Prudence my said son Henry Loop and my good friend James Bryan to be my executrix and executors to this my last will and testament to do and perform the same according to my true intent and meaning and that they retain all their charges and expenses in relation to their said trust and I also give them five dollars a piece in tokens of my love to them and their kind offices in accepting this trust. Hereby revoking all other former wills by me heretofore made in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Hillsdale this sixteenth day of March in the year of our lord one thousand and eight hundred and sixteen. Witnesses: Samuel Row ???? James Bryan George Overhiser [note: since he does not mention son John in any regard, it is probable that son John did not have issue and died before 1816. Also, it is almost certain that the children are listed in order of birth, at least as well as Peter could remember the order.] Cemetery inscriptions from Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York: (Loops) The stones are in three places in the cemetery. The main group is at the bottom of the cemetery hill, about the third row from the church and consists of the following eight stones in a single row in this order proceeding up the hill: (1) Erected (2) In (3) In in Memory of Memory of Memory of John C. Loop Capt Peter Loop M. Prudence wife son of who Died Oct of Capt Peter Loop Henry & 20th 1824. Loop Henry Loop Henry A. Loop 1809 - 1891 born 1831 - 1895 June 10, 1779 "until he came" Angelica Downing died his wife Aug. 13, 1868 Jenneete Harrison 1808 - 1897 his wife 1840 - 1909 The third group is a single Loop on the stone of Nehemiah Shutts. The stone, an obelisk farther up the hill from the second group, contains the following inscriptions: (side one) (side two) (side three) Nehemiah Shutts Sarah J. Loop [two or three of their 1806 - 1901 wife of Nehemiah Shutts children; for some died reason I didn't May 4, 1890 photograph or aged 82 transcribe it] I doubt the age given on David Loop's stone is correct. The birth order listed by Capt. Peter in his will and his christening date, together make his age at death more likely 74 then 84. From the IGI: Susanna Lupe daughter of Martin Lupe and Catherine Van Deusen christened 18 JAN 1784 in West Copake, Columbia, NY. From Omer Loop's 1955 letter (extract sent to me by Joanne Ellis): Capt. Peter had a son, Peter C. Loop (born around 1765; m. 1792 Sarah Birney and she died in 1846 at Belvidere, Ill. He had died in Jan. 1825 at Bath, NY.) This Peter C. Loop was a lieutenant in the Rev'y War. From film of miscellaneous newspaper items from Columbia Co, NY: Died (Hudson) Rural Repository, 8 November 1828 at Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York, Mrs. Prudence Loop, relict of the late Capt. Peter Loop, aged 89 years, formerly of Saybrook, Ct. From Omer Loop records: Kate L. Loop of Belvidere, Ill, in 1940, says that the order of children was: "Christian, Martin, Peter C., Philyer, Judge Henry, and Nathaniel. After that, the children by his last wife were David and Benjamin. Some younger children after Nathaniel went to Iowa. Relatives never heard of Nathaniel." Mary Loop Van Deusen had children living in 1816 who had been born before some of her father's children. Letter from Dee Merritt: I show Jane Loop as being born 15 AUG 1771 at Hillsdale, NY. [but we don't know if this is the same as Jenny Loop] Wild speculation: I came across the following baptismal record in the IGI: Bayly, Mary daughter of William Bayly and Deborah Springer 2 NOV 1755 N.Y., N.Y., Trinity Church Could this be Maria Bailey who married Capt. Peter Loop as his second wife? His first wife was Cousia Springer. Could Deborah Springer be his first wife's sister? A long shot, but intriguing nonetheless. Records of Allen L.
