CHAPTER 13 -- Martin Loop, Son of Capt. Peter

Martin LOOP [notes] [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the fourth child of Peter LOOP and Cousia SPRINGER, was christened in Claverack, January 26, 1766. He married Catherine VAN DEUSEN, prior to 1783, the year their first child was born. Sometime prior to 1790 they removed to Chenango County and settled in Oxford Township in a part that later became Guilford. There he was murdered by a neighbor, according to Omer Loop's records, and we do know he had died before the 1820 census, in which the rest of his family is listed without him. Nothing further is known about his widow, though in both the 1820 census of Chenango County, New York, and in the 1830 census of Crawford County, Pennsylvania, there is a female living with Charles Loop of the right age to be Catherine (Van Deusen) Loop. The children of Martin LOOP and Catherine VAN DEUSEN were:

+        1.  Susanna LOOP, b. September 28, 1783, and christened January 18, 1784, in Copake, Columbia County, NY. She d. young.

+        2.  Martin LOOP, Jr., b. about 1786 in Columbia County, NY. He is probably the Martin Loop, Jr., who served during the war of 1812 in Mead's 17th Regiment of New York Militia. He is censused in Mina, Chautauqua County, NY, in 1835, with a wife, one son and one daughter. He is possibly the Martin Loop censused in Vermilion County, IL, in 1840 and 1850. If so, his wife's name was Sarah.

+        3.  Peter LOOP, b. about 1795 in NY, m. June 17, 1817, Sena SPENCER, at Masonville, Delaware County, NY. He d. April 7, 1854 in Northeast, Erie County, PA.

+        4.  Charles LOOP, b. about 1800 in NY, m. (1) 1819, Sarah SEELEY, m. (2) Elizabeth (Betsey), surname unknown. He d. November 2, 1885, in East Millcreek, Erie County, PA, and is buried in Erie Cemetery, Erie, Erie County, PA.

+        5.  Eunice Ann LOOP, m. William Avery FRY. We do not have strong evidence that this Eunice Ann was Martin's daughter. However, after Martin's death about 1820, his son Charles Loop is censused with a female the right age to be a sister and William Avery Fry lived in Crawford County, PA, where Charles Loop lived. William Avery FRY was b. in CT. He was a tanner and currier. They lived in Crawford County, PA, in 1830. About 1833 they moved to Sheridan County, MO, for a couple of years and thence to Hancock County, IL. In 1846 they moved to Scott County, IA. He d. there in 1848.

Martin LOOP Jr. [Martin(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the second child of Martin LOOP and Catherine VAN DEUSEN, was b. about 1786 in Columbia County, NY. His probable son was:

+        1.  William H. LOOP, b. abt. 1814, in Chenango County, NY. He m. (1) July 23, 1839, Deborah DARRIN, of Colesville, Broome County, NY. She was b. April 10, 1823, probably in Colesville, Broome County, NY. She d. October 3, 1853, in Guilford, Chenango, NY. He m. (2) before 1855, Altana BURROWS, the widow of John NEVEL who d. in 1853. She was b. She brought with her to the marriage her children James NEVEL, Sophronia NEVEL, and Evans NEVEL, who are listed as LOOPs in the family in 1855, but with her children listed last after Rosalia LOOP. After William H. LOOP's death, they reverted to the last name NEVEL. He apparently d. before 1865, when his daughter Rosalia is listed as a ward of Homer HOLCOMB of Colesville, Broome County, NY. He had no children by his second wife Altana. His children by Deborah DARRIN were:

a.      Melissa LOOP, b. abt. 1839, in NY. She does not appear in the family in 1855, though she could have married by then.

d.       Julia A. (or E.) LOOP, b. abt. 1845, in Chenango County, NY. When her mother died she was, according to her tombstone, adopted by her sister Mary's in-laws, Homer and Betsey HOLCOMB. In 1855 she is listed as Julia HOLCOMB, child of Homer, but in 1860, she is listed as Julia LOOP, a 15 year old domestic in Homer HOLCOMB's household. She d. before 1865 and is buried in the New Ohio Cemetery, Belden, Broome County, NY. Her tombstone doesn't give her last name.

e.       Rosalia LOOP, b. abt 1851, in Chenango County, NY. In 1865 she is the ward of Homer HOLCOMB of Colesville, Broome County, NY, living in the same frame house with her sister Mary and Mary's husband Smith S. HOLCOMB.
