Probably few of the Loop blood did so much traveling hither and yon as did this Martin and his family, without getting out of range of the home estate or site. Captain Peter, as we have seen, was much married. Whether or not too many mothers or the the natural surge of the Loop blood, or both lay behind the fact, the fact remains that the elder three, known by some as "the sons of the first wife", fled the parental home and were soon found not so far apart, and not a long way from the Elmira to be, near the year 1800. Martin, as the census of 1790 shows, listed as Martin "Lupe" was in the township of Chemung, in great Montgomery, in that first general census year. The fact that one of his sons married into the family of Orange Spencer, led to the survival of numbers of Loop records not to be had from any other sources. The Rev. Orange Spencer, like others was itinerant, and he added the income of a little store to that of the pastorate. An old general store account book, wherein Mr. Spencer kept a sales record, has given us many precious items. Through it we know that the family lived in 1798 in Otsego County, then large, a fact referred to in print in only a single instance elsewhere. Through it, we learn of some of the marriages; of the drift westward; of the eventual settlement of the clans in Chautauqua county there to remain for a number of years. From this point, the family passed into Erie county, Penna., settling in North East, where its members may still be found. The first Martin, whom we have glimpsed as Martin Loop or Lupe in the district of Elmira (early Newtown) lived for a considerable part of his life in Chenango County, hard by Elmira. at first in Oxford, where censused in 1810, he was probably cut off when Guilford was sliced from Oxford. In Guilford, where censused in 1820, he died by the hand of a neighbor, as it seems. The son, Martin, succeeding to the headship of the family group, led them into Chautauqua county. While there, he lived near Peter and Henry; the one his brother, the other, it may be his cousin. At all events he was that Henry who lived for a period in Vermont and who came then at first into the Genesee count[r]y, near the southern boundary of the state, passing that border later. Descendants think that going later to Chautauqua county, he [Henry] died there. But they give him twenty years in McKean county, Penna., first. Some of his sons lived in McKean county, just within the Penna. border, where descendants still live. Peter lived in Mina and Sherman towns of Chautauqua county and later passed to Erie county over the border of the state of Penna. From letter from Admah Irwin Loop to Dr. Caro Valentine, 2/8/1927: The most [information] that I have now is from an account book kept 1795-1844 by Orange Spencer father of my grandmother (Peter's wife). ... The first mention of Loop in the above book is Feb. 17th 1800 Martin Loop Dr. mending shoes for self and two boys. [I wonder if in the original if that is "Dr.", "Jr.", or "Sr."] ... I remember having been told many years ago that my great grandfather's name was Martin and that his father's name was Martin also, but I have no knowledge of them prior to 1800. Census records from Chenango County show a Martin, and Martin Jr., in 1810, and then in 1820 show a Martin, Peter and Charles. Examination of the records can yield only one interpretation. The Martin of 1820 is Martin Jr., and Peter and Charles are his younger brothers. Charles also has living with him a woman the correct age to be his widowed mother and one female too old to be his daughter who is probably his sister. In fact, all of the people in the 1810 census can be accounted for in the 1820 census, except of course Martin Sr., who has apparently died. Further analysis of these censuses says that if Martin Sr.'s age is correctly stated as being at least 26 but less than 45 in 1810, then he was born between about 1766 and 1784. In 1810, however, he has a son between 16 and 26 who has a child under 5. I think it fairly likely, therefore, that in 1810, he is 40 or over, which would place his birth between 1766 and 1770. The only Martins I have found near that period are: Martin the son of Capt. Peter, christened 26 JAN 1766 Martin the son of Martin and Maria Minkler, chr. 12 MAY 1765 This latter Martin may not have survived. He is not mentioned in his father's will in 1786, and only two Martin's show up in the 1790 Census, one of whom should be Ens. Hendrick's son. We know that it is not Martin the son of Ens. Hendrick, born around 1763 because we know almost all his children's names and Martin, Peter, and Charles are not among them. So, I think it very likely that Capt. Peter Loop is, indeed, the father of Martin who is the father of Peter Loop of North East, PA. War of 1812 Servicemen's Records Index GS 882646 LOOP, Martin Jr. Private 17 Reg't (Mead) N.Y. There was a family of eight children; seven lived to be adults, viz.: Harriet N., Albert L., Lydia C., Wm. M., Margie A., Nancy A. and George H., who was killed at Chattanooga, in the Union Army... Mr. Wm. A. Fry by trade, was a tanner and currier, which he followed for several years. About 1833 he left his home in Pennsylvania, and moved to Sheridan Co., Mo., where he remained a couple of years. From there he moved to Hancock Co., Ill., where he remained until 1846, when he came to Scott Co., Iowa, and died in 1848, his mother having died a couple of weeks previous [whose mother?]... Mr. and Mrs. [Wm. M.] Fry are members of the M.E. church. Omer Loop's records say Martin died after 1827. Is there a will? How did Omer know?
