CHAPTER 15 -- Philyer Loop of Vermont

Philyer LOOP [notes] [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], was the second child of Peter LOOP and Maria BAILEY, born November 22, 1777 in Hillsdale. He moved to Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont in the late 1790's or early 1800's and probably there met and married, July 21, 1801, Martha (Patty) ODELL, whose parents, Joseph ODELL and Sally LEWIS, resided just across the border in Canada, in Odelltown, Quebec. She was born September 18, 1786. Philyer was a successful and wealthy merchant in Alburgh. He owned a store that straddled the border between the United States and Canada. He was the state representative for Alburgh in 1810 and a judge at least for the years 1814 and 1815. In 1819 and 1820 he was in partnership with Robert RANSOM in the firm of Loop & Ransom. In 1821 he formed a partnership with his son Joseph B. LOOP in the firm of Loop & Son. In 1822, Philyer was the richest man in Alburgh. At the time of his death he owned 1000 acres of land in Canada. The family was probably hit by tuberculosis. All but two of his ten children died in their late teens or twenties. He and his wife also succumbed early, he on April 21, 1822, and she on September 13, 1823. They and most of the family are buried in the Bush Cemetery in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. The children of Philyer LOOP and Martha (Patty) ODELL were:

+          1.  Joseph B. LOOP, b. July 18, 1802, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. Letitia MOTT. She was born about 1802. He d. April 10, 1824. She then married George AMES. Joseph B. LOOP and Letitia are both buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT.

+          2.  Sally M. LOOP, b. May 7, 1804, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. William Lewis SOWLES. He was b. about 1800. She d. May 16, 1827, and is buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT.  He d. in 1878. On her tombstone she is listed as the "consort of Col. Wm L. Sowles". He d. September 17, 1864. They had children:

a.    Mary Martha SOWLES, b. about February 17, 1823, d. September 21, 1842, buried in the Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, VT.

+          3.  Augustus Philyer LOOP, b. January 10, 1806, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. Phebe HILL. She was b. 1808. He d. February 17, 1834, and is buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. She d. 1837.

+          4.  Alanson D. LOOP, b. December 20, 1807, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. Sylvia, surname unknown. He d. August 17, 1830, and is buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT.

+          5.  Louisa Maria LOOP, b. May 27, 1810, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. William H. LYMAN in Alburgh. He was b. 1802, in Vergennes, Addison County, VT. She d. August 16, 1827. He d. September 17, 1864. Both are buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. They had one son:

a.    Philyer Loop LYMAN, b. March 28, 1827, d. October 18, 1882. He had daughter Louisa Maria LYMAN, who had a son Jesse Albert RUST, who had a daughter Janet RUST, who m. Mr. WOOD.

+          6.  Almira E. LOOP, b. December 17, 1812, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, d. there November 5, 1830, and is buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT.

+          7.  William Henry Webster LOOP, b. March 20, 1815, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. He m. 1836, Catherine R. GAUL of Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. She was born in Hudson, Columbia County, NY, about December, 1815. They were living in Hudson in the 1850 census with her father Richard GAUL. In 1855, they were living there with his nephew Joseph Philyer LOOP. She d. January 24, 1861, of dropsy, and is buried in the Hudson City Cemetery, Hudson, Columbia County, NY. He m. (2) Jennie E. LOVEJOY. She was b. abt. April 1, 1819 (calculated), in NJ. They are living together in 1865 in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, with his daughter Adelia. In 1870 they living in Hudson boarding at Hudson House in Franklin Square. He is a bookkeeper. In 1880, they are living in Brooklyn, NY, with a neice Jennie DERGREW. He is then listed as a plumber. Jennie (LOVEJOY) LOOP d. of neck cancer, September 14, 1886, in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. He d. July 24, 1891, in Brooklyn. He and Jennie are buried together in the Hudson City Cemetery, Hudson, Columbia County, NY. There are no dates on their stones. With his first wife he had children:

a.    Adaline R. (Delia or Adelia) LOOP, b. about 1842, in Hudson, Columbia County, NY. In 1865 she was living with her brother William in Brooklyn, New York.

b.    William H. LOOP, b. about 1851, in New Jersey.

+          8.  Melissa A. LOOP, b. September 23, 1816, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. September 10, 1837, James H. GAUL in Hudson, Columbia County, NY. He was b. abt. 1812. She d. January 31, 1839 of consumption. He d. August 16, 1839 of drowning. They are buried together in the Hudson City Cemetery, Hudson, Colombia County, NY.

+          9.  Philyer L. LOOP, b. July 8, 1819, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. Asenath R. SOWLES. She was b. October 17, 1818, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, the daughter of David SOWLES and Jemima SOLOMON. He d. October 1, 1846, in Portland, Ionia County, MI. She then married Oliver James DARBY. She and her second husband are buried together in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT.

+        10.  Hiram L. LOOP, b. July 8, 1821, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. He is censused in Hudson, Columbia County, NY, in 1850, living with his brother William.

Joseph B. LOOP [notes] [Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the first child of Philyer LOOP and Martha (Patty) ODELL was born July 18, 1802, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. He married Letitia MOTT. She was born about 1802. He died April 10, 1824. She then married George AMES. Joseph B. LOOP and Letitia are both buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. The children of Joseph B. LOOP and Letitia MOTT were:

+        1.  Joseph Philyer LOOP, b. about 1824 in VT, m. July 4, 1851, Esther HALL of Boston, MA. She was b. about 1822 in NH, daughter of Thomas HALL. She d. March 28, 1852, and is buried in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. He died about March 5, 1891, in Troy, Rensselaer County, NY.

+        2.  Lizzie LOOP ?, buried Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT.

Augustus Philyer LOOP [notes] [Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the third child of Philyer LOOP and Martha (Patty) ODELL was born January 10, 1806, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. He married Phebe HILL February 1, 1827, probably in Alburgh. She was born December 24, 1808, in Isle LaMotte, Grand Isle County, Vermont, the daughter of Caleb HILL and Cynthia STRONG. Augustus P. LOOP died February 17, 1834, and his widow died March 3, 1837. Both are buried in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. The children of Augustus P. LOOP and Phebe HILL were:

+        1.  William Augustus LOOP, b. November 10, 1827, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. He d. unmarried June 1, 1858, in Summerfield, Monroe County, MI.

+        2.  Sidney Joseph LOOP, b. November 20, 1829, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. October 22, 1857, Harriet Newel REDMAN in San Francisco, CA. She was b. August 15, 1840. She d. about 1904, probably in Alameda, Alameda County, CA. He d. July 29, 1908, at Berkeley, Alameda County, CA.

+        3.  Calvin Alanson LOOP, b. March 9, 1832, probably in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. February 8, 1855, Sibyl J. NILES. She was born July 7, 1836. He d. August 25, 1878. She then married William LYMAN. She d. January 18, 1909.

Philyer L. LOOP [notes] [Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the ninth child of Philyer LOOP and Martha (Patty) ODELL was born July 7, 1817, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. He married Asenath R. SOWLES. She was born October 17, 1818, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont, the daughter of David SOWLES and Jemima SOLOMON. Philyer L. LOOP was a private during the rebellion of 1837 along the Canadian border. He died October 1, 1846, in Portland, Ionia County, Michigan. She then married Oliver James DARBY. She died April 28, 1887, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. She and her second husband are buried together in Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. The children of Philyer L. LOOP and Asenath A. SOWLES were:

+        1.  Melissa A. LOOP, b. November 24, 1840, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. May 25, 1868, Elias W. BEARDSLEY in Alburgh. He was a merchant born about 1826. She d. March 15, 1888, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, and is buried in the Bush Cemetery there.

+        2.  Sarah Martha LOOP, b. June 20, 1842, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT, m. November 29, 1860, Phineas LADUE. He was b. in Alburgh,, Grand Isle County, VT, the son of Abram LADUE and Permilla. She d. November 25, 1864.

+        3.  Ann Eliza LOOP, b. October 14, 1844, m. June 7, 1866, Henry WEDGEWORTH in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. He was a farmer.

Joseph Philyer LOOP [Joseph B.(7), Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the first child of Joseph B. LOOP and Letitia MOTT, was born about 1824 in Vermont. He married July 4, 1851, Esther HALL of Boston, MA. She was born about 1822 in New Hampshire, the daughter of Thomas HALL. Joseph P. LOOP is listed as a clerk in Clinton County, New York, in the 1850 census. His wife died March 28, 1852, and is buried in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. At one time he owned a hotel at Middle Falls, Washington County, New York. In 1855, he is a clerk living with his Uncle William Henry Webster LOOP in Hudson, Columbia County, NY. In 1860 he was the proprietor of Dudley House, Quay Corner, Hamilton, Rensselaer County, New York. Before 1869 he moved to Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, where he is listed as a cigar manufacturer in partnership with John W. Dodge in the 1869 Troy City Directory. He died about March 5, 1891, in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, aged 67 years. The children of Joseph Philyer LOOP and Esther HALL were:

+        1.  George LOOP, a printer in Troy in 1891.

+        2.  Bailey LOOP.

Sidney Joseph LOOP [notes] [Augustus P.(7), Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the second child of Augustus P. LOOP and Phebe HILL, was born November 22, 1829, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. Sometime before 1847 he was blinded in the left eye by a kick from a "vicious" horse. He served in the Mexican War in Co G, 1st US Regiment of Artillery. He was described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, fair complexion, blue eye, and brown hair. He served at Jalapa, Tegucigalpa, St. Angel, Mexico City, and Veracruz. He came to California in 1850 during the gold rush. He was a member of the Vigilantes. He claimed also to have fought in the Civil War. He was a farmer and lumberman. He married October 22, 1857, Harriet Newel REDMAN in San Francisco, California. She was born August 15, 1840. She died about 1904, probably in Alameda, Alameda County, California. He died after 1907. The children of Sidney Joseph LOOP and Harriet Newel REDMAN were:

+        1.  Florence Woodburn LOOP, b. August 5, 1859, probably in San Francisco, CA, d. March 31, 1880.

+        2.  Grace Darling LOOP, b. August 14, 1862, probably in San Francisco, CA, m. Dr. J. K. HAMILTON. She d. after 1907.

+        3.  Frank Sumner LOOP, b. November 18, 1864, probably in San Francisco, CA. He was a City Councilman of Alameda, CA, in 1908.

Calvin Alanson LOOP [Augustus P.(7), Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the third child of Augustus P. LOOP and Phebe HILL, was born March 9, 1832, probably in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. He married February 8, 1855, Sibyl J. NILES. She was born July 7, 1836. He died August 25, 1878. She then married William LYMAN. She died January 18, 1909. They are buried together in North Cemetery, Isle la Motte, Grand Isle County, VT.

+        a.  Ransom Calvin (Ray) DARBY, b. May 30, 1888, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT. He m. August 6, 1913, Della Mae DIXON, in Kirksville, Adair County, MO. In 1918 in his WWI draft registration he is described as tall, medium build, gray eyes, brown hair, with a wife and two children in Sioux County, ND. He had previously served six months in the US Navy from which he had been discharged as disabled. He was a farmer. He was divorced and living with his parents. in 1920, in Sioux County, ND.

+        b.  Doris A. DARBY, b. September 13,. 1898, in IL. She m. June 11, 1919, Frederick William GERTH, in Corson County, SD. He was b. June 13, 1885, in SD, the son of Fritz GERTH and Mary KEAMANN.. They lived in Aberbeen, Brown County, SD, in 1928. He was a mechanic. She d. December 8, 1985, in Riverside County, CA. They had children:

William A. LOOP [Calvin Alanson(8), Augustus P.(7), Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the second child of Calvin Alanson LOOP and Sibyl J. NILES was born May 25, 1859. He married August 27, 1887, Anna Sarah HURST. She was born May 17, 1871. He died October 1, 1913. She died January 6, 1951. They are buried together in North Cemetery, Isle la Motte, Grand Isle County, VT.

Sidney Calvin Cady LOOP [Calvin Alanson(8), Augustus P.(7), Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the third child of Calvin Alanson LOOP and Sibyl J. NILES was born June 16, 1863, in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont. He left home in at age 14 and worked as a bellboy in New York until moving on to Kansas, then California, then Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. There he married November 8, 1894, Grace Adelia BROWN. She was born about 1876, in Michigan, the daughter of Charles BROWN and Elinor METCALF. In 1897, he went to Skagway, Alaska, where he worked as a packer guiding miners seeking gold over the White Pass. He apparently had a mine claim which he sold. They then farmed in Virginia for two years before taking a homestead in Grandview, Yakima County, Washington. He died March 20, 1923. His widow remarried. She died in 1980, probably in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington.

John Merton LOOP [James Calvin(10), William A.(9), Calvin Alanson(8), Augustus P.(7), Philyer(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the fifth child of James Calvin LOOP and Bessie Fisk PIKE was born January 13, 1925. +        2.  Linda Ruth LOOP, b. September 17, 1951, m. January 29, 1979, Joel Harvey BADEN. He was b. May 13, 1947. They had children:

a.       Sonja Lyn BADEN, b. November 21, 1981.

b.      Lindsay Meredith BADEN, b. April 6, 1983.
