CHAPTER 17 -- David Loop of St. Lawrence County, NY

David LOOP [notes] [Martin(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the third child of Martin LOOP and Mary HULL. There is no primary source data to prove either that the David Loop of St. Lawrence County was the son of Martin and Mary, or that Martin and Mary had a son David. Assuming for the moment that he was, there is confusion as to his date of birth. The 1800, 1810, and 1830 census records indicate he was born after 1785. The 1850 census puts his date of birth as about 1784. The 1860 census puts the date as about 1780. His tombstone inscription puts the date as about 1779. He was probably born in Washington County after the family had moved there from Schagticoke about 1785. The 1790 and 1800 Washington County census records for Martin Loop and the 1810 Oneida County census records for "M. Loop" and "D. Loop" (who live next door to each other in that census) match each other perfectly and also match known facts about Martin Loop's family. This of course does not prove that D. Loop is David Loop or that David Loop is a son of Martin Loop. It does, however, make it seem very likely that both are true. David Loop of Oneida County disappears from Oneida County after the 1810 census, and David Loop of St. Lawrence County first shows up there in the 1820 census. David LOOP married Sally FLETCHER before 1810. She was born about 1786 in Troy, Rensselaer, New York. In the 1810 census of Oneida county they have a daughter under five years old. This daughter apparently died young. Between 1810 and 1811 they moved to St. Lawrence County where the rest of their children were born. They are censused in Russell in 1820, and are probably in the same town in 1830, though the census that year does not give the town. About 1835, David Loop of St. Lawrence County moved to Lenox Township in Madison County, bringing with him the younger children and leaving behind at least his son Vanransler. Lenox Township is on the border with Oneida County. The Erie Canal, on which David's father is supposed to have worked, runs through the township. David's son David P. Loop was married in Lenox in 1839. In the newspaper report of the marriage in 1842 of David's daughter Orpha Maria Loop she is listed as being "of Lenox". David's daughter Sylvia died in the village of Oneida (which is in Lenox) in 1903, which most likely means she married while the family was in the area and never moved away. Probably after all their children had left home, sometime between 1842 and 1844, David Loop and his wife moved back to St. Lawrence County probably to be near his older sons already established there. There his first wife Sally died August 25, 1844. By 1850, David Loop had remarried to a woman named Almira, born around 1801 in New York State. They were censused in Russell in 1850 and 1860. Ted Loop says the second wife's name was Pricilla BELCHER, but her name is shown as Almira in both census records. They apparently had no children. David Loop died December 30, 1869, in Russell. He and his first wife are both buried in the Belleville Cemetery in Russell. During his life David Loop was a farmer and a laborer. He was never a doctor as family myth suggests. The children of David LOOP and Sally FLETCHER were:

Jeremiah LOOP [notes] [David(7), Martin(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the second child of David LOOP and Sally FLETCHER. He was born November 8, 1811. He may have been born in Oneida County before his parents moved to St. Lawrence County. Omer Loop says the move occurred in 1812. Many claim he was born in Russell in St. Lawrence County where he grew up. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) DYGERT on September 38, 1836 in Russell. This was after his father had already moved to Madison with much of the rest of the family. Elizabeth DYGERT was born May 10, 1812, in DeKalb, St. Lawrence, New York. All but one of their children were born in Russell. The exception was the second child, born in Lenox, Madison County, probably while they were visiting Jeremiah's parents. We have not found Jeremiah yet in the 1840 census, but he is censused in 1850 in Russell with his wife and eight of his children, living near his father (who had by that time moved back) and some of his brothers. He was a farmer. According to a relative, Leah Noble, and also to court records, Jeremiah LOOP died in Russell on October 30, 1866, from wounds received when a balance wheel for a wood sawing machine blew up and sent pieces of metal into his intestines. Land records in St. Lawrence County, for some reason, have him buying land in Sarahsburg early in 1868. He is buried in Russell in the Knox Cemetery. His widow moved to Wisconsin, probably to live with her daughter Mary (LOOP) BARNETT. There she died in Omro, Winnebago County, on February 11, 1880, and is buried there. The children of Jeremiah LOOP and Elizabeth (Betsy) DYGERT were:

She was born October 6, 1821, in Russell, St. Lawrence County, NY, the daughter of Arba COLLISTER and Rachel STEWART. Vanransler was called "Rant" and Clarissa was called "Clarissy". They lived in a log cabin in the southern part of Russell Township, called Belleville. In the 1840 census of Edwards, St. Lawrence County, NY, Vanransler is listed as being involved in trade and manufacturing, not in agriculture. In the 1850 census of Russell, he is listed as a farmer. They also had land in Hermon, St. Lawrence County, NY. Their three oldest sons went off to fight in the Civil War. All three returned. Clarissa died March 7, 1870, in Russell, St. Lawrence County, NY, "in her 48th year." About 1870, Vanransler married Susan Wooley DYGERT, who was born in October, 1838. He served in Company L, 9th NY Cavalry, as a farrier, from October, 1861 to October 1864. After the war, he is consistantly listed as a physician. They moved to Wisconsin about 1864. It is possible that he also had experience with veterinary medicine during the war and somehow carried that over to a practice as a doctor. He died April 30, 1891, at Kaukauna, Outagamie County, Wisconsin. Josephine died there November 13, 1892.  Both are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton, Outagamie County, WI. His son and grandson were both doctors. He died May 11, 1920, and is buried in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery, Seattle, King County, Washington.

He was born about 1818 in Russell, St. Lawrence County, NY. He came with his parents when they moved to Madison County, about 1835. He married Lucy Jane MARLET, December 27, 1839, at Lenox, Madison County, New York. She was born January 3, 1819, in Monroe County, New York. By trade he was a carpenter and joiner. Their first child was born in St. Lawrence County in 1840, but it is not clear if they ever took up residence there, as their second child was born back in Madison County in 1845. Their third child was born in Monroe County in 1847. By 1854, when their fourth child was born, they had settled in Cattaraugus County, where they lived in a house next to the train station in Little Valley. When the Civil War broke out, David and his son George both joined the 9th NY Cavalry. Neither of them returned. At the end of the month he reported back for duty with his regiment.
