He married (1) Rhoda Marie SMITH. She was born about 1810, in Maine. He was apparently involved in the "Patriot War" in Canada in 1837-40, captured at the Battle of the Windmill, tried in Kingston, Ontario, and sentenced to be transported to Tasmania.  He suffered many tribulations on his voyage there and subsequent work on a chain gang, but was eventually released and somehow was able to return home.  Though there is confusion about this, he appears to have married (2) Rosanna McPEAK. She was born March 19, 1939, in Taswell County, Illinois. Some researchers have decided that Rosanna was the wife of Hiram LOOP, Jr., born about 1843. But at least three different census records describe Rosanna as the wife of the Hiram LOOP born about 1811.  And the newspaper article below verifies this marriage.  In 1885, when his last known child was born, he was about 74 years old. He wife was only about 46. He died August 19, 1893, after being injured by a run-away team. He is buried in Buck Creek Cemetery, near Hopkinton, Delaware County, Iowa.

John Henry LOOP [John Andrew(7), Andrew(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the seventh child of John Andrew LOOP and his wife Azuba PATTERSON, was born February 25, 1835, in Clay, Onondaga County, New York. He was a farmer. He married, after 1860, Francelia Antoinette (Janette) RICE. In a letter to his brother he mentions "Net and the children". She was the daughter of Joseph RICE and his first wife Harriet COLEMAN. Early in the Civil Warm, December 1, 1861, in New York City, he enlisted in Co A, 19th Regiment of New York Volunteers. He sent his brother Charles the following letter.   This sounds like his first letter home after enlistment:

Governors Island, Castle William, NY, December 28, 1860.

Dear Brother, I take my pen to drop you a line to let you know that I am in the service of our Government and in the 90th Regiment NY State Volunteers quartered on Governors Island in Company A Captain John C. Smart, Col Morgan. I am well and enjoying myself better than I expected to when I inlisted. We have rather hard quarters here but we are expecting to move for Key West tomorrow at least our officers are packing up their plunder as fast as they can and the talk is that we shal go this line without fail and as quick as we land we shal drop you another line and let you know where you can direct to me. They talk very strong of war with England but I don't see it. But if it does come I had rather fight them than the South. I do not think that there is any danger of war with them yet anyway. If you can you must write to our folks and let them know that you have heard from me. I have written to them but I don't know as they will get it and if you get this, if you will drop them a line you will oblige me. I would like to write more but our mail goes out at 4 o'clock and if I write more I shal miss the mail.. Tell link if you see her to be a good girl and as soon as we stop and I find out where I stop so that I can get an answer I shal write to her and shal expect to hear all about Mr. Ives. Tell Net and the children I should like to see them but it is out of the question until I get back from Dixie. I must close. So good by all till next time. Yours ever.

At enlistment he was described as 5 feet 8 1/2 inches tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. He was discharged for disability April 4, 1862 at Key West, Florida.  He is registered for the draft in NY in June of 1863 (age 27) along with his brother Charles.  He appears to have two conflicting tombstone inscriptions.  On his father's tombstone (see above) it lists his date of death as February 6, 1860, at age 26. But this tombstone would not have been erected until after 1880 when his father died. Also, if he had died on that date he could not have served in the Civil War. A separate tombstone in the same cemetery (see below) gives his dates as 1835 to 1867 and notes his Civil War service.
