Died, Saturday morning, December 2, at his residence in the town of Bennington, Jacob Loop, aged 84 years, 2 months, and 14 days. Mr. Loop was born in Washington County, NY, served an apprenticeship of seven years in the printing business at Johnstown, then in Montgomery County, NY, abandoned the business at the age of 21 years and removed to Cayuga County in that state, where he married and was for several years a partner in the ownership and operation of a wool carding, dyeing, and cloth dressing mill. He was subsequently a resident of Wayne County for about nine years and removed thence with his family to Michigan in 1835, locating in the town of Pontiac, Oakland County where he improved a farm. He disposed of his property in Pontiac in 1857 or '58 and removed to Ohio where he resided near Toledo until 1861, when he came into Shiawassee County, bought the land, erected the buildings, and improved the farm in Owosso township now owned by Mr. Bilbeimer. After selling that farm he returned to this county and bought the farm where he died, in Bennington on the town line road between that town and Owosso. Throughout his long life Mr. Loop has maintained a reputation of unquestioned probity. He had belonged to the order of Free and Accepted Masons since his early manhood, having been made a Mason at Throopville, Cayuga County, NY, had been advanced through all the degrees to be a Knight Templar, and had been chosen to occupy various positions of honor and trust in the order. In his earlier days he was considered high authority in questions of Masonic law. He lived to cast his vote as a democrat at fifteen Presidential elections, and but for his inability to help himself he would have voted on the 16th occasion for Tilden. He was buried Sunday afternoon, by the Knights Templar, under the direction of P.G.C. Hugh McCurdy, of Corunna Commandery. Funeral services took place at the Maple River Baptist Church, Rev. Mr. Stimson, rector of Christ Church in this city, officiating. The concourse of Masonic brethren and neighbors was larger than could enter the house.
