CHAPTER 6 -- Sebastian Loop of Germantown, NY

Sebastian LOOP [notes] [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] of Germantown, Columbia County, New York, was born in Langenbach, in the Parish of Marienberg, in 1728 and was christened on the first Sunday after Epiphany. If Epiphany was celebrated on January 6, as it is today, then he was christened on January 11, 1728. He was the son of Jacob LUPP of Langenbach by his second wife, Anna Catherina SCHMIDT. He may have come to America with his brother Christian in 1739, but at any rate he had arrived by 1750. He married near 1753 Anna Margaret MINKLER, whose twin sister married his brother Martin LOOP. She was the daughter of Josiah MINKLER and Gertrude SNYDER, and was christened in Germantown, Columbia County, New York, on May 2, 1733. He is probably the Sebastian Loop listed in the Albany County Militia, Eighth Regiment, along with Peter Loop, Christian Loop, and Martin Loop, his brothers or nephews. We do not know when either Sebastian or his wife died. They have not been found in the 1790 census. The children of Sebastian LOOP and Anna Margaret MINKLER were:

+        1.  Josiah LOOP, b. January 1, 1754,christened at Germantown, Columbia County, NY, m. (1) Anna DECKER, m. (2) Catherine OSTERHOUT. He d. 1799.

+        2.  Jacob LOOP, christened March 7, 1756, at Germantown, Columbia County NY, d. young.

+        3.  Elizabeth LOOP, christened May 27, 1760, at Germantown, Columbia County, NY, m. Henry KLUM. They had children:

a.    Catharine KLUM, b. October 3, 1792, christened October 25, 1792, at Manorton, Columbia County, NY.

+        4.  Jacob LOOP, christened February 6, 1763, at Linlithgo, Columbia County, NY, m. July 3, 1791, Mary LOOP, his first cousin.

+        5.  Gertrude LOOP, christened March 3, 1771, at Germantown, Columbia County, NY, m. John SIPPERLY. They had at least a daughter Gretchen SIPPERLY, baptized April 8, 1796, at Germantown Reformed Church.

Josiah LOOP [notes] [Sebastian (4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the first child of Sebastian LOOP and Anna Margaret MINKLER was born on New Year's Day in 1754, and was christened at Christ Lutheran Church in Germantown, Columbia County, New York. He married, before 1782, Anna DECKER. She was born in 1755, the daughter of Benjamin DECKER and Margaret ALTHUYSEN. Josiah LOOP and Anna DECKER lived in Clermont, Columbia County, New York. All their children were christened at the nearby Germantown Reformed Church. They appear in the 1790 census with one male child and one female child. The physician Dr. Wilson of Livingston Manor attended the family regularly at least from 1789 to 1793. He recorded in his day book on two occasions that he bled Josiah's wife and on one occasion provided "worm tea and physic" for one of Josiah's children. Dr. Wilson's records show that Josiah moved his residence from Clermont to nearby Red Hook, Dutchess County, New York, in 1792. Josiah's wife Anna died prior to 1796. He then married near October 5, 1796, Catherine OSTERHOUT, in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York. There apparently were no children by the second marriage. After Josiah's death his widow Catherine married a Mr. ELMANDORF, and died sometime after 1819. Josiah and Catherine show up with his children by his first wife in the 1800 census in Rhinebeck. There is one extra male in the household between 16 and 26. This may be a servant or perhaps a child of Catherine's by a previous marriage. Josiah Loop left a will dated August 9, 1806 in which he describes himself as an innkeeper in the town of Rhinebeck:

Signed: his

    Josias X Loop

            mark

The will was probated December 14, 1806. The children of Josiah LOOP by his first wife Anna DECKER were:

+        1.  Maria LOOP, christened, May 26, 1782, at Germantown Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY, m. Jacob S. ELMANDORF. She died after 1819. They had a son Samuel Peter ELMANDORF, b. October 30, 1807, and christened December 27, 1807, at Feura Bush, Albany County, NY. And they had a daughter Julia who married a man named HOVER (probably HAVER).

+        2.  Jacob LOOP, christened December 6, 1785, at Germantown Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY. He left no wife nor children, d. April 11, 1819 in Red Hook. His will mentions: step mother Mrs. Catherine ELMANDORF, sister Catherine, and sister Maria ELMANDORF, wife of Jacob S. ELMANDORF.

+        3.  Catherine LOOP, christened March 3, 1788, at Germantown Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY, m. March 10, 1812, Philip D. SCHERMERHORN. They had the following children christened at the Schodack (NY) Reformed Church:

+        4.  John LOOP, christened September 5, 1790, at the Germantown Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY, was still alive in 1806 when his father died. This is possibly the John Loop who served during the War of 1812, in the 27th U.S. Infantry of Capt. Aaron Crane, enlisting on October 11, 1814. He is listed as 26 years old, born in Dutchess County, a carpenter, 5 feet 9 and 3/4 inches tall, black eyes, brown hair, and fair complexion. He deserted at Sandy Hook, presumably NJ, April 22, 1815.

Jacob LOOP [notes] [Sebastian (4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the fourth child of Sebastian LOOP and Anna Margaret MINKLER was christened February 6, 1763, at the Linlithgo Reformed Church in Livingston, Columbia County, NY. Sponsors at the baptism were Martin COOPER and his wife Elizabeth LOOP, Sebastian's sister. Jacob LOOP married July 3, 1791, at Linlithgo, Maria (Polly) LOOP, his first cousin, the daughter of his mother's twin sister and father's brother. She herself was a twin, born May 14, 1774, at Manorton, NY. They are listed in the marriage record as both being from Livingston Manor. They had eight children, five of them christened in Claverack. In 1800 and 1810, they are censused in Claverack. In 1820 and 1830 they are censused in Ghent. In 1834, Mary is listed in her sister Gertrude HARDER's will as Mary LOOP, wife of Jacob LOOP of Ghent. In 1840, they are censused in Kinderhook, probably with son Martin. Mary LOOP is listed in 1843, in her nephew Martin HARDER's will as Aunt Polly LOOP, wife of Jacob LOOP of Kinderhook. Gertrude HARDER lists the "lawful heirs" of Mary LOOP as being Mariah LOOP, Margaret BABCOCK wife of William, Jacob LOOP, Charity LOOP, and Catherine LOOP. Jacob died sometime between 1843 and 1850 when Mary is listed alone in the census. The children of Jacob LOOP and Mary (Polly) LOOP were:

+        1.  Mary LOOP, b. October 19, 1794, christened November 29 at Claverack, Columbia County, NY, d. after 1834.

+        9.  Catherine LOOP, b. December 29, 1811, christened January 26, 1812, at Claverack, Columbia County, NY, d. after 1834. She is probably the Catherine LOOP who married Benjamin BARTLETT on October 25, 1834 in Ghent, Columbia County, NY.

Jacob LOOP [Jacob(5), Sebastian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the fourth child of Jacob LOOP and Maria (Polly) LOOP was born July 9, 1801, and christened July 26, at the Reformed Church in Claverack, Columbia County, New York.
