CHAPTER 16 -- Benjamin Loop of Ontario
Benjamin LOOP [notes] [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the last child of Capt. Peter LOOP and Maria BAILEY. He was born February 28, 1783, and christened June 8, 1783 at Linlithgo, Columbia County, New York. He was known as Benjamin Franklin Loop, but the middle name does not appear on his baptismal record. November 20, 1810, he is listed in the Kingston Gazette as having a letter waiting for him at the Kingston Post Office, Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario. Before 1814 he had married Agnes KENNEDY, and had a son Henry, probably not their first child. In 1817, they were residing in Hallowell Township in Prince Edward County, Ontario, when they're daughter Ann was born. Benjamin's brother Nathaniel also resided in Hallowell. Benjamin's wife, Agnes Jane KENNEDY, was born May 8, 1788, probably in Canada. Benjamin and Nathaniel probably moved their families from Prince Edward County to Middlesex County about 1825, settling around London, Ontario. It is not clear how long Benjamin and Agnes lived in the London area, but they have not been found there in the 1842 census, though it has some townships missing. By 1836 their son John had established a farm in Mersea Township, Essex County. By 1845 (perhaps well before) Benjamin and Agnes had established squatter's rights to land in Gosfield Township, next to Mersea, in Essex County. Benjamin and Agnes do not appear in the 1851 census of Essex County. Nor do they show up in the 1850 census of Michigan. So it is likely that they moved to Flint, Michigan, in late 1850. There they lived with their daughter Mary (Loop) Griffith and her husband. Agnes Loop died in Flint, February 15, 1860, Benjamin died January 19, 1865. They are both buried in the Bristol Road Cemetery, in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. The birthdate inscribed on Benjamin's tombstone (December 12, 1781) conflicts with the birthdate given on his baptismal record.

Joseph LOOP [notes] [Benjamin(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the first child of Benjamin Franklin LOOP and Agnes Jane KENNEDY was born about 1811 in Canada. He is probably the Joseph Loop whose residence is listed as Caradoc Township, Ontario, on an 1837 land record. Caradoc Township is about 10 miles west of London, Ontario, in Middlesex County. Prior to 1845 he may have moved around some, as his child born in 1842 is listed on his marriage record as being born in Michigan, and his daughter born in about 1843 is listed as having been born in Oxford, east of London. On August 24, 1845, he bought Lot 6, Concession 3, of Plympton Township, Lambton County, Ontario. He sold the lot August 29, 1867. On August 12, 1869, he bought Lot 19, Concession 2, in Mersea Township, Essex County, from William Loop, probably his nephew. He married Mary PELTON before 1842. She was born about 1805 in Canada. The children of Joseph LOOP and Mary PELTON were:

John LOOP [notes] [Benjamin(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the second child of Benjamin Franklin LOOP and Agnes Jane KENNEDY. He was born about 1815. One county history has his birth as "near London, Ontario", but this is unlikely, as his sister was born in Prince Edward County, Ontario, in 1817, which would have the family migrating in the wrong direction. One census has him born in the U.S. and another in Canada. The families of Benjamin Loop and Nathaniel Loop probably moved from Prince Edward County to Middlesex county around 1825 settling near London. In 1836, John, single and around age 21, left Middlesex County, possibly alone, to settle a homestead in Mersea Township, Essex County, Ontario. That same year he married Mary Lucinda (Lucy) ROBERTS, who was born in Mersea Township, Essex County, Ontario, in 1816. They lived in Mersea at least until 1861, but they both died at nearby Kingsville in Gosfield Township, he on February 8, 1897 and she on February 18, 1888. They are buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Leamington, Essex County, Ontario, though there are apparently no stones. The children of John LOOP and Mary Lucinda ROBERTS were:

cabin". He never married, but took as a foster child, George Henry MANERY
( b. 1872, d. 1937). George Henry MANERY married Sarah Alsorah LOOP, daughter of
Benjamin Franklin LOOP, Jr. Joseph Loop was a seaman on the schooner
"Sweeper" of Toledo on Lake Erie for 11 years before going into the
fishing business with his brothers Henry and Ira. He sold out of that business
and went into farming in Mersea Township. He died March 9, or June 19, 1921 and is buried
in Lakeview Cemetery in Leamington, Essex County, Ontario.
