CHAPTER 11 -- Christian Loop of Elmira, NY
Christian LOOP [notes] [Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the first child of Peter LOOP and Cousia SPRINGER was Christian LOOP, named after Peter's father. He was born on April 16, 1759 in Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York. He married, about 1781, Lucy FERRIS. She was born December 26, 1760. Along with his brother Peter, Jr., he removed with his family to Elmira, NY, then called Newtown, sometime between 1787, when she is listed as a founding member of the First Baptist Church of Hillsdale, and 1790. The 1860 Gazeteer of New York State says: "The first settlement [of Elmira] was made by Col. John Hendy and Christian Loop, who located on the present site of the village in 1788". He is listed as living on Sullivan Street in 1790, and as constable of the nearby town of Chemung in 1791. He died probably in 1799, as his last child was born in April of that year, and Lucy is censused alone in Chemung in 1800. She married October 25, 1801, William JENNINGS by whom she had two sons: Hector JENNINGS and Jesse JENNINGS. She died before 1816. The children of Christian LOOP and Lucy FERRIS were:

married Peggy HUEY. She is listed in an indenture as the "true heir"
of Abraham HUEY, possibly her father. Peter C. Loop was a surveyor. They lived
in Dauphin county in 1800 where they are censused with one child under ten
years old. He is listed as being of Painted Post, Steuben County, NY, in 1814,
but Peggy Loop is listed as being of Dauphin County, PA, again in 1820. They

Chemung County, NY, m. Brazillai BUTLER. He was baptized March 19, 1775, in Rocky Hill, Hartford County, CT, the son of Elisha BUTLER. In 1850
they were living in Elmira with a number of their children. He d. abt. April 3, 1857, in Elmira, Chemung County, NY. She d. December 29, 1869, in Elmira of tuberculosis.

He married Jemima STOWELL daughter of Asa STOWELL and Hannah BIXBY at Bainbridge, Chenango County New York. She was b. abt. 1790 in Chenango County, NY. He died in 1830, in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York. From at least 1855 to 1870 she lived with her daughter Lucretia (LOOP) MORSE in Broome County, NY. William and Jemima are buried together in Afton, Chenango County, New York. The children of William Ferris LOOP and Jemima STOWELL were:

He married Elizabeth (Betsy) McLAUGHLIN. She was born between 1795 and 1801. He died November 19, 1833, in Elmira, Chemung County, NY. She is censused in 1840 in Elmira, with one male under five, two males five to nine, one male ten to 14, one male 15 to 19, and one female 20 to 29. The male under five is probably not hers. It says she is the mother of four children, and that she's widowed and has been married twice. In 1876 she is listed as the widow of Christian LOOP in the Elmira City Directory. Their children were:

September 15, 1902, aged 73, in Binghamton, Broome County, NY, buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, NY. Hattie d. abt. 1930, and was buried March 14, 1930 in Woodlawn Cemetery. Stephen Van Rensellaer LOOP [Christian(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the seventh child of Christian LOOP and Lucy FERRIS was born December 14, 1796, in Chemung County, New York. He married (1) Ruth McLAUGHLIN. In 1840 he is listed in Elmira, Chemung County, NY, with one son under five, one son between five and nine, with no wife. Between then and 1860, he m. (2) Harriet, surname unknown, b. abt. July, 1803. In 1860 he is censused in Elmira as a blacksmith who is insane. His wife is then listed as Harriet LOOP. In 1863 he is listed as a laborer in Elmira. In 1865 he is listed as a blacksmith in Elmira having been married twice. In the same census Harriet is listed as having been married once and the mother of four children. In 1880 he is an inmate at the Willard Asylum, Willard, Seneca, New York, suffering from "chronic mania" which he has had for 16 years. At that time he had been in the asylum for six years. Harriet died April 26, 1871, aged 67 years, 9 months, and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira. The children of Stephen Van Rensellaer LOOP and Ruth McLAUGHLIN were:

She was b. abt. 1803 in Chemung County, New York. In 1860, and 1865, he is living alone in Elmira, Chemung County, NY, and is listed as an "idiot". He died of old age in December, 1879 in Horseheads, Chemung County, New York, apparently living in a poor house. Hannah died between 1880 and 1887. George LOOP [notes] [William Ferris(7), Christian(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the first child of William Ferris LOOP and Jemima STOWELL was born February 15, 1811, in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York. He married (1) Elmira PHILLY, by whom he had one daughter. She died before 1842. He then married (2) her sister Wealthy PHILLY who was born 1823. She died in 1871, and is buried in Nelson Cemetery, Nelson, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married (3) Eliza, maiden name unknown. She was born about 1821 in New York State and apparently was first married a Mr. MINNICH, by whom she had a daughter Harriet MINNICH. He died in August, 1898, in Nelson, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, and is buried there in Nelson Cemetery. The children of George LOOP and Elmira PHILLY were:

Eliza Ann LOOP [William Ferris(7), Christian(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the second child of William Ferris LOOP and Jemima STOWELL was born November 26, 1815, in Coventry, Chenango County, New York. She married October 2, 1835, John Hinckley VINTON. He was born April 29, 1812, in Coventry, Chenango County, New York, the son of Samuel VINTON and Florinda HINCKLEY. John Hinckley VINTON died November 29, 1870, in Afton, Chenango County, New York. She died November 12, 1895, in Golden, Jefferson County, Colorado, and is buried in the Boulder Cemetery.

Albert Mortimer LOOP [notes] [William Ferris(7), Christian(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the third child of William Ferris LOOP and Jemima STOWELL was born September 12, 1816, in Elmira, Chemung County, New York. He married (1) Sarah GANOE. She was born about 1819 in New York State. She died December 20, 1863, and is buried in the Nelson Cemetery, Nelson, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married (2) in 1865 to Sophia J. TREMAIN. She was born in November, 1836, in New York. He was a physician in Nelson, Tioga County, New York, starting his practice in 1840, and practicing at least until 1897. Between 1854 and 1856 he lived in Rock Island, Illinois, where he was apparently the Clerk of the Court. He died May 28, 1904, in Nelson, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at the home of his daughter Mrs. Luther WELLS, and is buried in Nelson Cemetery. He married December 9, 1856, Olive Eliza PANGBURN. She was born November 18, 1832, the daughter of John and Sarah PANGBURN, of Norwich, Chenango County, New York. She died in 1870. He then married Harriet A. MERRILL, before 1875. She was born in 1828 in Chenango County, New York, and died about April, 1897. He was a carpenter, builder and contractor. In 1900 he was living with his daughter and her husband in Tyrone, Schuyler County, New York, and in 1910,they were living in Binghamton, Broome County, NY. He d. December 20, 1910, in Binghamton, Broome County, NY. He and his second wife are buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, Chenango County, New York. The children of Charles H. LOOP and Olive Eliza PANGBURN were:

Broome County, NY. She was b. December 5, 1959. In 1884 he went to Kansas where he was a bookkeeper and cashier
in banks. He moved to Springfield, MO, and thence to Cotter, Baxter County, AK,
where he was a bank director and attorney. She d. February 26, 1926, in Arkansas. He d. there in January, 1944. Both are buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Cotter, Baxter County, Arkansas. They had one child:

William Ferris LOOP, Jr. [notes] [William Ferris(7), Christian(6), Peter(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)], the fifth child of William Ferris LOOP and Jemima STOWELL was born September 15, 1822, in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York. His father died when he was eight and when he was twelve his mother sent him to live with his uncle, Dr. Nathan Boynton, who taught him some medicine, but he had to leave when he was fifteen. He came back to Bainbridge where he formed a woolen business with Thomas R. TERRY, whose daughter, Violette TERRY, he married September 26, 1845. She was born about 1828, in New York. Her mother's name was Mary Ransy ROSE. In 1846 he moved to Waukegan, Illinois, where he formed the first school. He lived a while in Galena, Illinois, and taught in Hanover, Illinois. In 1855, he moved to Savanna, Carroll County, Illinois. There he was Justice of the Peace in 1858 and 1859. He died June 1, 1911, in Savanna, Carroll County, Illinois, and is buried there.

She was born September 1, 1876, in Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan. He was a Captain and medical officer at Camp Lee, Virginia, during World War I. He died October 19, 1945. She d.
