CHAPTER 26 -- Wilhelm Leupp of Switzerland and Ohio

Wilhelm LEUPP [ ] was born May 19, 1805, in Beggingen, Bezirk Schleitheim, Schaffhausen, Switzerland, the son of Hans Jacob LEUPP and Verena SCHIEDEL. He immigrated from there to the United States in 1875, with his wife Magdalena E. WERNER, and three sons Jacob, John, and David. They came on the steamship SS State of Nevada, which sailed them from the port of Antwerp, Belgium, and arrived in New York City, on April 30, 1875. It is unclear exactly when son William LEUPP immigrated, but he claimed 1872 or 1873 in several census records. So son William LEUPP may have come over first to prepare the way for the rest of the family. Wilhelm LEUPP and Magdalena WERNER were married about 1845 in Switzerland. She was born about March 21, 1815, 1820, or 1825, in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Here is an old advertising card showing the steamship SS State of Nevada. The ship has sails as well as steam engines. This was typical in the early days of steamships. In 1880, they were living in Ridgeville, Henry County, Ohio. Wilhelm LEUPP died August 2, 1883, in Ohio and is buried in Aeschliman Cemetery, Pettisville, Fulton County, Ohio. Magdalena died July 6, 1902, in Fulton, Fulton County, Ohio, and is buried in Rupp Cemetery, Archbold, Fulton County, Ohio.

They moved to Morton, Mecosta County, MI. He d. in Morton, Mecosta County, MI, on July 26, 1931. Elizabeth d. September 18, 1934, in Pontiac, Oakland County, MI. They are buried together in Wambold Cemetery, Remus, Mecosta County, MI. They had children:

a. Clara LEUPP, b.December 1885 in MI. She m. October 31, 1908, Ovid Elias FERRIS, in Montcalm County, MI. He was b. August 7, 1882, and d. in October, 1965, in MI. They had one child, Harold Carl FERRIS, who m. April 24, 1948, Mary Clara KORTE, in Dearborn, Wayne County, MI.

b. Dorathea Louise LEUPP, b. August 7, 1887 in Morton, Mecosta County, MI. She m. in 1914, Leonard John DIEHM. He was b. in 1875 and d. in 1945. They had children Elizabeth Christina DIEHM (1915-2008), Pauline Theadora DIEHM (1916-2006), and Jacob William DIEHM (1919-2018). Dorathea d. February 1, 1964, in Eloise, Wayne County, MI. She is buried with her husband in Wambold Cemetery, Remus, Mecosta County, MI.

c. John Henry LEUPP, b. September 10, 1889, in MI. He m. March 14, 1916, Frances C. McCLOUD, the daughter of Dan McCLOUD and Jennie WINTERS. They lived in Hinton, Mecosta County, MI. They had a daughter Marguerite LEUPP, b. about 1919, in MI. Frances d. in 1982. John H. LEUPP d. January 31, 1985, in MI. They are buried together in Morton Township Cemetery, Mecosta County, MI.

g. Johanna K. LEUPP, b. about 1897 in MI. She m. on September 3, 1921, Leo C. WITTKOPF, son of Ernest WITTKOPF and Anna WERTH. He was b. about 1897 in WI.

h. Hermann Otto LEUPP, b. June 21, 1899, in Morton, Mecosta County, MI. He m. (1) Anna, surname unknown. He m. (2) Marie Alvina BILLIAU (1896-1970), May 16, 1952, in Lucas County, OH. He m. (3) Pauline Marie GLOCKNER (1918-1999). He d. October 23, 1979, in Bradenton, Manatee County, FL. He had no children.

i. Louisa Magdalena LEUPP, b. September 3, 1901, in MI. She m. March 15, 1920, Alfred Raymond GRAHAM. She d. June 29, 1994, in Wayne County, MI. They had children Mary GRAHAM, Jack GRAHAM, Joyce GRAHAM, Shirley GRAHAM, and Dorothy Jean GRAHAM. They divorced March 26, 1946. She d. June 29, 1994, in Dearborn, Wayne County, MI.

William LEUPP [Wilhelm(1)] the second child of Wilhelm LEUPP and Magdalena E. WERNER, was born October 16, 1854, in Beggingen, Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He married January 19, 1882, Katherine YODER. She was born in 1851, in France. She died in 1916. He died September 3, 1933. They had children:

David LEUPP [Wilhelm(1)] the third child of Wilhelm LEUPP and Magdalena E. WERNER, was born September 15, 1859 in Beggingen, Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He married April 16, 1891, in Henry County, Ohio, Anna F. MARTIN, the daughter of Charles MARTIN. She was b. in February, 1871, in OH. She d. September 7, 1939, in Wauseon, Fulton County, OH. He d. in 1947, in Ohio. They had children:

He married (1) 1912, Lena Bell CLAIR. She was b. February 15, 1894, in Fulton County, Ohio. She d. February 26, 1922. He m. (2) October 27, 1923, in Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, Hazel May FLINT. She was b. February, 1895, in Michigan, the daughter of Amos FLINT and Emma DESHIER. She had married (1) Elmer VONIER. Hazel d. December 5, 1954. Christian LEUPP d. Dinah H. LEUPP [William(2), Wilhelm(1)] the seventh child of William LEUPP and Katherine YODER, was born April, 1894, in Ohio. She married November 14, 1912, in Fulton County, Ohio, Edward D. MILLER. He was born in 1891, the son of John C. MILLER and Susan MANDLEY. She died August 25, 1946, in Ohio. He died December 2, 1968, in Fulton County, Ohio. They are buried together in Archbold Cemetery, Archbold, Fulton, OH. They had children:

January 9, 1992, in Wauseon, Fulton County, OH. They are buried together in Saint John Lutheran Church Cemetery, Ridgeville Township, Henry County, OH. They had a children: Dean E. MILLER (1944-2017), Donna MILLER, Victor MILLER, Denny MILLER, Carl MILLER.

+ 2. Floyd William MILLER, b. June 6, 1915, in Fulton County, OH. He m. June 16, 1937, Pearl W. LEININGER. She was b. July 17, 1915. She d. April 4, 1993. He d. October 13,1996, in Toledo, Lucas County, OH. They had at least one daughter: Suzanne E. MILLER, b. about 1938, in OH. Suzanne m. May 23, 1956, in Fulton County, OH, Roger Allan JOHNSON, and had a child Roger Allan JOHNSON.

+ 3. Glen Monroe MILLER, b. September 13, 1916, in Archbold, Fulton County, OH. He m. Marguerite STOUT. She was b. February 1, 1919, in OH, the daughter of Charles James STOUT and Anna Bernice RASEY. He d. May 24, 2000, in Henry County, OH. She d. December 20, 2008, in OH. They had a son James E. MILLER (1940-1971). They had a daughter Marlene Faye MILLER (1939- ).

+ 4. Leonard C MILLER, b. August 22, 1918. He m. Clara Cinderella DOMINIQUE. She was b. September 28, 1924, in Toledo, Lucas County, OH. He d. January 20, 1996. She d. August 17, 2000, in Fulton County, OH.

+ 5. Orval John MILLER, b. December 12, 1919, in Archbold, Fulton County, OH. He was a heavy equipment operator. He m. December 31, 1942, in Henry County, OH, Evelyn Edna ARPS. She was b. 1923, daughter of Ferdinand ARPS and Hilda HELBERG. Evelyn was b. November 22, 1923, in Hamler, Henry County, OH. He d. September 4, 1998, in Wauseon, Fulton County, OH. She d. May 9, 2014, in Napoleon, Henry County, OH. They had children Tom MILLER, and Sharon MILLER.

+ 6. Lorine Susan MILLER, b. May 4, 1923, in Archbold, Fulton County, OH. She m. March 11, 1942, Victor William MILLER. He was b. April 11, 1919. She d. August 30, 2006 in Archbold, Fulton County, OH. He d. August 11, 2010, in Morristown, IN. They are buried together in Archbold Cemetery, Fulton County, OH. They had two sons: David L. MILLER and Jon A. MILLER.

+ 7. Venette Ruth MILLER, b. January 3, 1926, in OH. She m. Maurice SCHMUCKER. She d. December 29, 2017 in Archibold, Fulton County, OH.

+ 8. Velma M. MILLER, b. 1928, in OH. She m. December 30, 1950, in Fulton County, OH, Robert H. OVERMIER. He was b. September 15, 1924, the son of Howard Kenneth and Oneita B. OVERMIER. Robert d. May 15, 2012. She d. 2017. They had children: Edward OVERMIER, Bill OVERMIER, Diane OVERMIER, and Debbie OVERMIRE.

+ 9. Lucille R. MILLER, b. July 3, 1934, in Henry County, OH. She m. October 27, 1956, Roger ZIEGLER. He was b. August 6, 1932. He d. November 10, 2011. She d. June 14, 2017, in Toledo, Lucas County, OH. They had children: Karen ZIEGLER and Kristi ZIEGLER.

William J. LEUPP [William(2), Wilhelm(1)] the eighth child of William LEUPP and Katherine YODER, was born April 7, 1897, in German, Fulton County, Ohio. He married around 1938, Frances Margaret FOUTS. She was born April 18, 1907, in Custar, Wood County, Ohio, the daughter of Sylvester FOUTS and Clara FRIED. She had married (1) Vernon BUEHRER in 1925 by whom she had at least four children before they divorced. William LEUPP died July 28, 1973, in Wright, Hillsdale County, Michigan. She d. April 23, 1989, in Wauseon, Fulton County, Ohio. They had children including:

+ 1. William V. LEUPP, b. July 14, 1939, in Wauseon, Fulton County, OH. He d. May 27, 2014, in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MI. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Ransom, Hillsdale County, MI.

+ 2. James C. LEUPP, b. October 11, 1946, in OH. He m. Brenda Lou VERNIER. She was b. July 11, 1952, in Hudson, Lewanee County, MI, the daughter of Lewis VERNIER and Martha POWERS. She d. April 29, 1982, in New York, New York County, NY. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Ransom, Hillsdale County, MI. They had two daughters.
